During its 2016 redesign, BMW moved the X1 from a longitudinal, rear-drive platform to the Mini Cooper’s transverse, front-drive-based chassis, making it the only front-drive based BMW sold in the U.S. Power for the 2017 BMW X1 comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 rated 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic sends power to the front wheels in the X1 sDrive28i and to all four wheels in the X1 xDrive28i. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system can send up to 100 percent power to the rear wheels as needed. The X1 is EPA-rated 22/31 mpg city/highway in front-drive trim and 23/32 mpg with all-wheel drive.
Despite being shorter in length and narrower than its predecessor, its taller overall height and shorter engine compartment contributes to greater interior space and a higher driving position than the previous model’s more car-like ride height and outward visibility.
