The refreshed 2017 Toyota Highlander receives a new powertrain that includes a direct injection 3.5-liter V-6 and an eight-speed automatic, which replaces the outgoing six-speed gearbox. Toyota has not released power figures for the new engine, but says it’ll be more powerful than the outgoing 3.5-liter V-6, which makes 270 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. The addition of direct injection should improve fuel economy, as well as the optional stop-start system. Toyota has added a new SE trim with a sport-tuned suspension and unique visual upgrades. All Highlander trim levels now come standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense package that bundles a number of driver assistance features including a forward collision prevention system, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control. Styling has also been updated, with a redesigned front fascia, new wheel designs, and a revised interior with four more USB ports for a total of five.
