Just released in 2016, the 2017 Toyota Prius continues with the same hybrid powertrain. All Prius models (not including V, C, and Prime variants) are powered by a 1.8-liter I-4 making 95 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque and two electric motors producing a total of 71 horsepower and 120 lb-ft of torque. Because the gasoline and electric motors continuously trade-off workload, the total system output is 121 horsepower. Power goes to the front wheels via a CVT. The base Prius Two trim utilizes a nickel-metal hydride battery, but all other trim levels employ a new lithium-ion battery that weighs less and holds more electricity. Most Prius trim levels achieve an EPA-estimated 54/50 mpg city/highway for the 2016 model year. The Eco trim level, however, sacrifices features like power seats and the spare tire to save weight, achieves 58/53 mpg for 2016; 2017 ratings have yet to be released as of this writing.
